45 Common Fabrics and Care Tips — Part 1: Wool, Tencel Wool, Cashmere, and Velvet

👗 个人分享 | Personal Introduction

As someone who has worked in the garment manufacturing industry for years, I’m often asked by clients and buyers: “How should I wash and care for these fabrics?”
Understanding the characteristics and proper maintenance of each fabric not only extends the life of your clothes but also helps you make smarter, more professional choices. Today, let’s start with four timeless and widely used materials — Wool, Tencel Wool, Cashmere, and Velvet.

🐑Wool

Wool feels full and rich to the touch, with excellent elasticity, strong moisture absorption, and outstanding warmth.
However, it tends to pill and shrink easily, and it is sensitive to high temperatures, so extra care is needed.

Washing:
Dry cleaning or hand-washing in cold water is recommended (use a wool-specific detergent). Avoid machine washing or vigorous rubbing.

Drying:
Lay flat to dry in the shade. Avoid hanging, which can cause deformation, and keep out of direct sunlight to prevent fiber hardening.

Ironing:
Use medium-low temperature steam (below 140°C / 285°F). Always place a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric to prevent damage.

🌿  Tencel Wool

A modern blend of Tencel (Lyocell fiber) and wool, this fabric combines Tencel’s silky drape with wool’s natural warmth.
It has superior moisture-wicking ability compared to pure wool, resists wrinkles, and maintains shape well — though minor pilling may still occur with friction.

Washing:
Hand-wash in cold water or use the wool cycle on a washing machine (with a laundry bag) and mild detergent.

Drying:
Lay flat to dry in the shade; avoid hanging to prevent stretching.

Ironing:
Steam at medium-low temperature (below 140°C / 285°F) with a protective cloth.

Note:
Avoid vigorous rubbing while washing. Fabric softener can be used to reduce static and prevent minor pilling.

🐐 Cashmere

Known as “soft gold,” cashmere is incredibly fine, lightweight, and luxuriously warm.
It’s delicate and prone to deformation or pilling from friction, and its high cost reflects its rarity and softness.

Washing:
Hand-wash in cold water only (preferably with a cashmere-specific detergent) by gently pressing rather than rubbing.

Drying:
Roll in a towel to remove excess water, then lay flat in a cool, ventilated place to dry. Never expose to direct sunlight.

Ironing:
Use low-temperature steam (below 120°C / 250°F), keeping the iron at least 1 cm above the surface to avoid direct contact.

💎 Velvet

Velvet is celebrated for its luxurious sheen and buttery-smooth drape.
The fabric’s distinctive dual-directional reflection gives it a unique glow, but it’s prone to pressure marks, pile crushing, and has limited abrasion resistance.

Washing:
Professional dry cleaning is recommended. If washing at home, use a mild detergent and gently hand-wash in cold water.

Drying:
Dry inside out in the shade to prevent fading from sunlight.

Ironing:
Steam at medium temperature (below 150°C / 300°F) with a pressing cloth, always ironing on the reverse side.

Daily Care:
Avoid rubbing against rough surfaces; use a soft brush to gently smooth the nap in one direction.

✨Quick Wrap-Up

No matter the fabric, proper care is the secret to keeping your clothes looking new and feeling luxurious.

When you understand the materials, you don’t just wear fashion — you appreciate the craftsmanship behind every garment.
