The Science of Spinning: How Twist Creates Texture
In my 20 years, I’ve seen brands choose the best fibers but end up with a “hairy” or “weak” fabric. Why? Because they ignored the Spinning Process. Spinning is the mechanical act of twisting fibers together to create a continuous strand of yarn.
At CdGarment, we treat spinning like high-precision engineering.
1. Ring-Spun vs. Open-End: The Quality Gap
These are the two most common ways to make yarn, and the difference in the final garment is massive.
Open-End (OE) Spinning: Faster and cheaper. The fibers are “wrapped” together loosely. This creates a yarn that is bulkier and rougher. If you want a cheap, stiff “promotional” t-shirt, this is what you use.
Ring-Spun Spinning: A slower process that continuously twists and thins the yarn. This forces the fibers to lay flat and tight. The result? A yarn that is significantly stronger, softer, and smoother.
2. The “Twist” Factor (TPI)
The number of Twists Per Inch (TPI) determines how the fabric behaves and feels against the skin:
Low Twist: This creates “soft” and “lofty” yarns. It is ideal for products like towels, cozy fleeces, or luxury knitwear where a “fluffy” hand-feel is desired. However, because the fibers are loose, they are more likely to “pill” (form small balls of fuzz).
High Twist: This creates “crisp,” “cool,” and “strong” yarns. High twist is used for high-end formal shirting or durable performance gear. It makes the fabric more resistant to pilling and abrasion, helping the garment stay looking “brand new” even after many washes.
3. Advanced Spinning: Siro-Spun and Compact Spinning
At the top tier of the CdGarment encyclopedia, we look at:
Compact Spinning: A vacuum system that pulls in all the “hairy” ends of the fiber during twisting. This creates a yarn with almost zero surface fuzz, resulting in a fabric with a “polished” and high-definition look.
Siro-Spun: Two strands are twisted together simultaneously. This makes the yarn incredibly strong and creates a beautiful, even surface that is perfect for premium, high-gauge knits.

Simple Insight
If the fiber is the “DNA,” the spinning is the “Muscle.” You can’t have a high-performance garment with weak, hairy yarn.
At CdGarment, we ensure your yarn is spun for strength, so your brand is built to last.
