The Art of the Press: Why Ironing is the “Final Tailoring” Step

In my 20 years on the floor, I’ve seen many brands wonder why their samples look sharp but their bulk production looks “flat” or “tired.” The secret isn’t just in the sewing; it’s in the In-Process Pressing.

For structured garments like Suits and Button-Down Shirts, ironing is not the last step—it is a continuous workflow. If you wait until the end to iron a suit, it’s already too late.

Building Shape with Steam

A suit jacket is a 3D sculpture made from flat fabric. To get that perfect curve over the chest or a crisp roll on the lapel, we use “under-pressing.” This means we press the internal layers—the canvas and the interlining—before the outer fabric is even attached.

  • The Collar & Lapel: Without complex, multi-stage steaming, a lapel will lay flat and lifeless. We use specialized “bucks” (shaped pressing blocks) to give it a permanent, elegant curve.

  • **The Shoulder: ** We use steam to “shrink” or “stretch” the fabric slightly to fit the human shoulder perfectly. This is a skill that takes years to master.

The Vacuum-Steam Finish

For our shirts and trousers, we use a two-stage process to ensure the garment doesn’t lose its shape in the shipping box:

  1. High-Pressure Steam: This relaxes the fibers so they can be molded.

  2. The Vacuum Table: Our pressing tables have a built-in vacuum motor. Once the steam shapes the fabric, the vacuum instantly sucks the heat and moisture out. This “freezes” the crisp edges and clean seams in place.

Why the Complexity Matters

In a cheap factory, one person might iron 50 shirts an hour with a standard iron.

At CdGarment, a single suit might pass through five different pressing stations. Why? Because a garment that is “set” correctly with vacuum-steam will resist wrinkles during shipping and stay sharp even after a long day of wear.

Simple Insight

Proper ironing is like the “curing” process in construction. If you don’t set the shape correctly at the factory, the garment will never look its best. We invest in complex pressing workflows so your brand always makes a perfect first impression.
